October 13, 2004 I'm proud to say I came out
with a whole bunch of lies.
Here are as follows -
I'm not done with it though. =x
Redesigning of a Touch and Feel story book.
My coursework is about a story based on a Singapore legend “Red Hill” which is also known as “Bukit Merah" in Malay. I chose this story as it has something to do with the history of Singapore and it would serve as an educational source to the people who view the book.
I wanted to make the book special and different from most of the books that could be seen off the rack in bookshops and libraries so I decided to change it into a touch-and-feel book. The book is mainly aimed for growing children between the age of 3 to 7. Through this approach, many more children would be able to read the book and feel the pictures at the same time.
As it would be different from majority of the books that can be found off the racks, the children would think of it as special and tend to remember the story more easily than others who read the book without pictures or hands-on.
What inspired me to do this?
Being a book-lover, I make frequent visits to the library and bookshops. Because of my love for books, especially those with pictures, I decided to create a book so that others can benefit from it. Just like many other people, I derive joy by sharing my works with others.
Sometimes however, I find that books with text and pictures are not enough. They seem to lack certain details and in extreme cases, prove to be an eyesore.
After much thought, the idea of a touch-and-feel book struck me and I thought it would turn out to look nicer as more love, care and effort would be put into the book.
Also, many parents prefer to buy books like fairytales or comics to let their children read. Many children would not have a chance to know about stories and legends of Singapore. Through this approach, I hope that more children would have better background information about how Bukit Merah was named and if possible, pass down the legend to the many generations to come.
Idea development
At the very beginning, I went to the library and searched for books about the myths and legends of Singapore. Next, I chose between the 3 topics – “How Singapore was named”, ”Sisters’ Island” and “Bukit Merah”.
I chose “Bukit Merah” as I thought many children would be less familiar with the topic and many would have wondered why it was red in colour.
After selecting the story, I did a draft of the different slides that I would be completing over the next few months.
When the draft was completed, I began looking for pictures that were needed.
I went for two art exhibitions held during the June holidays and on a certain weekend and noted the materials the artist used, the style of painting and their final outcomes of their paintings after it is done.
I got my friends to help me pose in different positions and took photographs of their positions.
Also during the holidays, I went overseas and managed to visit their tree plantation where banana trees could be found in huge quantities. I also went to their Underwater World and Animal museum where I managed to snap photographs of garfishes (also known as swordfishes).
On two weekends, I went down to the Singapore History Museum to study the structure of huts that used to be a common sight in Singapore.
Then I made my way to the beach to take photographs of the sea and waves.
After collecting all the necessary photographs needed and with the help of the draft previously drawn, I managed to put draw all the pictures on paper and paint them.
After the painting was completed, I touched up certain parts of the paintings and began my search for the materials needed for the touch-and-feel books, selecting the materials and texture carefully according to its need.
After two days of intensive hunt for materials, I began to match appropriate mediums to parts where I wanted to place the texture.
Touch up was done to the art work and the story was printed out according to its appropriate pages.
My final artwork
My final art work is based on Singapore's Bukit Merah. It is done as a storybook in A4 size. The pictures drawn are, as far as possible, close to the descriptions from the story. Several mediums like sand, cloth and rocks are added to the page to give it texture and colour.
Evaluation
I hope to paint every page well as some of the works are not well presented or coloured.
I enjoyed drawing the preparatory work and layouts because they seemed to be a challenge as the drawings have to be well drawn or else it would be difficult when it comes to the painting process.
After completing this coursework, I find myself more confident in shading and have learnt how to shade using colour pencils. I also developed patience and the bonds between me and m classmates are stronger now.
